Branding Photos for an Alt Hairstylist
Branding photos for hairstylists tend to be repetitive and kind of basic. But there is nothing basic about Kayla at Favorite Salon in Tampa, FL! So she needed personal branding photos that matched her main character style.
Jesi created 36 portraits for Kayla, all in a vertical crop since her primary usage would be on Instagram. Kayla did not give Jesi any specific requests for colors or poses, but expressed that she liked the wide angle look she'd seen in other photos Jesi had created.
Kayla also needed to find the right outfit for her personal branding photos. She decided to rent a dress from Nuuly that fit her whimsical, colorful personality. Jesi then based her background color choices around that garment!
Since Kayla wanted to keep this session more fluid and lean into eccentricity, Jesi decided NOT to provide a shotlist or moodboard. While these tools are common in most of her projects, they can limit creativity impulsivity and add a layer of pressure to projects that need more nuance. Kayla gave Jesi creative freedom and trusted her art direction.

Branding photos that get attention
Kayla now has a gallery of clean, expressive images she can use in her social media posts and her booking platform. And she's already had new clients tell her that these photos drew their attention and made her stand out from other hairstylists in Tampa!
CHALLENGES
Overcoming awkwardness in branding photos
Kayla's biggest fear about her branding photos would be that she would look awkward. She describes herself as being uncomfortable on camera, especially when it comes to posing or making any facial expression other than just a big smile. Jesi's speciality is working with people who need a lot of direction on set, so that their poses and expressions look natural and fun.
